First patient praises unit
The first patient to receive chemotherapy in Alnwick has praised the new service.
Noel Scott, from Rothbury, was the first patient to make use of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s new oncology day unit which opened at Alnwick Infirmary on September 19.
The 78-year-old has previously been travelling to Wansbeck General Hospital for his treatment and is delighted that he’s now able to come to Alnwick instead.
“It’s so much easier to come to Alnwick than travel to Wansbeck hospital,” said Noel.
“I know the staff from previous visits and they are second to none. It’s quite something to be the first patient and I’m pleased – the first of many.”
The purpose-built unit is based in the former Coquet Ward at the hospital and the area has undergone a refurbishment of more than £200,000 to include the latest equipment and the best facilities for patients.
The new nurse-led service will initially operate one day per week, extending to two days per week later in the year.
The unit at Alnwick is the trust’s fifth specialist oncology unit, with the others at Berwick Infirmary and Wansbeck, Hexham and North Tyneside general hospitals.
