In Northumberland our Adult Social Care team provides support with daily living at home for people with dementia, help to stay active and information and advice on local services including care homes. We also support friends and family who are caring for someone with dementia

Care at home

Our social workers give personalised practical support to people with dementia and their families and friends who look after them to help them with daily living at home. This includes assistive technology called telecare which helps people to live at home safely. For people who can no longer live at home we also offer advice on care homes.

Signposting

We provide information about a range of services and support including services run by other organisations, explaining what’s available and how to access them.

Support to stay active

Our Ageing Well in Northumberland programme offers a range of social and leisure activities including gardening and walking groups for people with dementia in various locations throughout the County. The programme is run by our Involvement and Service Development Team. We also have specialist day services for people with dementia in Bedlington and Blyth.

Support groups and forums

We facilitate regular dementia forums for people living with dementia and their families in Alnwick, Blyth, Choppington and Hexham. The forums aim to inform and empower people to:

  • take part in consultation activities
  • receive regular mailings keeping them informed of local services and support
  • attend meetings on key topics
  • acts as a critical friend to develop health and social care services for people living with dementia
  • share information, experience and expertise with each other

Click here for a copy of our ‘Dementia Forum Annual Summary’.This includes topics discussed at our forums in 2012-13 and what has changed as a result. If you would like to join a forum contact  our Involvement and Service Development Team.

Supporting friends and family in caring for someone with dementia

We work with carers to assess their own needs including issues like how to get a break from caring responsibilities, coping with the practical aspects of caring, and looking after their own health and wellbeing. For more information click here.
