Children’s hospital art exhibition for NHS’ birthday

An exhibition of artwork to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the NHS has gone on display at The Northumbria hospital.

Year 2 pupils at Eastlea Primary School, Cramlington, have worked with staff at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust on a creative arts project.

Inspired by Northumbria staff visiting the school, the children produced drawings and poems for the exhibition.

Ben Nixon, a former pupil of Eastlea school, organised a sponsored walk along Hadrian’s Wall accompanied by his grandfather Robert Nixon, to raise funds towards the exhibition.

At the opening the children were treated to a tour of the emergency department and the children’s unit before sharing a birthday cake.

Elaine Henderson, director of nursing delivery at Northumbria Healthcare, said: “It’s been an absolute privilege to work with the children on this special project to mark the NHS’ 70th birthday.

“We are pleased that sharing our experiences of working in the NHS has helped their ideas flourish for their work which is a fun celebration of NHS iconic images.

“We were delighted to welcome them to The Northumbria hospital to see their art up on the wall and we’ve already had many positive remarks from patients, visitors and staff.”

The project was part of events at the trust to mark the anniversary and pay tribute to staff and patients who have contributed to the health service since its inception on 5 July 1948.

The celebrations have featured seven tea dances, birthday cakes for patients, flags, bunting and balloons for wards and a service of thanksgiving at Hexham Abbey. A special embroidery is also being put together by the community to go on display at Wansbeck General Hospital.

The children’s art exhibition has been organised by the trust’s Bright Northumbria charity which has, for the past 15 years, funded the development of an award-winning healing arts programme which uses art as as a therapeutic medium to improve the hospital environment for patients, visitors and staff.
