Calendar Lads walk Hadrian’s Wall in latest charity challenge
A group of hospital staff have completed their latest fund-raising challenge to help youngsters with additional learning needs.
The Calendar Lads – so-called because they bared all for a charity calendar for their first challenge in 2013 – walked 26 miles per day for four days from Barrow-in-Furness and concluding at North Tyneside General Hospital.
The group, who all work for Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in Northumberland and North Tyneside, raised more than £6,000. The money is to be split between the trust’s Bright Charity and Clarty Commandos, a popular forest school which helps youngsters with additional learning needs.
Craig Leathard, charge nurse in the emergency department at The Northumbria hospital, is the driving force behind the campaign.
He said: “The walk itself was indeed a challenge and we would like to thank everyone who helped us along the way and made sure we had everything we needed, and everyone who cheered us along the way.
“Clarty Commandos is an inspirational process offering everyone the opportunity to achieve, developing confidence and self-esteem through outdoor learning. They are building their facilities to enable them to offer fun and independence as well as learning essential skills in the outdoors environment.
“This type of initiative appeals to the very essence of the group, so when we were made aware of the Clarty Commandos initiative in Northumberland, we knew we had to be part of it.”
Some of the funds will also be donated to Northumbria’s Bright charity, which supports a number of projects in hospitals and the community which provides the extras which make a difference to people living in Northumberland and North Tyneside.
The Calendar Lads were formed six years ago and have so far raised thousands of pounds for Bright and a chosen charity each year.
