Trust chosen as acquisition partner

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has today been selected as the preferred bidder to acquire North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, which manages the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and Whitehaven’s West Cumberland Hospital.

The Board of North Cumbria Hospitals NHS Trust made its decision last night after considering a detailed evaluation of the financial and non-financial proposals from each bidder.

Throughout the bid process, Northumbria Healthcare demonstrated that it has the necessary experience and expertise to assist North Cumbria in meeting the challenges it currently faces.

Jim Mackey, chief executive of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are delighted with the Board’s decision to announce Northumbria Healthcare as the preferred bidder for acquiring North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, this is excellent news for all patients, the public and staff.

“Northumbria Healthcare has a proven track record of delivering some of the best healthcare in England, that coupled with strong financial management and leadership will ensure that, as one unified organisation, we can continue to build confidence in the quality of the services delivered by the NHS within the communities we serve.

“Our focus, for the coming months, will be on working with all stakeholders to ensure hospital-based care is fit for the future and on a sound financial footing. Whilst we recognise that there are many challenges ahead, we are optimistic and confident in being able to deliver real benefits to patients.”

The decision marks the start of the acquisition process and therefore North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust will continue to be managed as a separate organisation until the acquisition is completed.

North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust announced in February 2011 that it was seeking to become part of a larger organisation because, although it provides quality clinical care, it is too small to remain financially viable as a standalone trust.
