Scouts’ donation for maternity unit

1st Ashington Scouts have donated £200 to the maternity unit at Wansbeck General Hospital.
The scouts raised the money from a street collection at Christmas where Santa was towed in a sleigh. They took over the tradition from the ‘Lionesses’ – a group which had carried it out for many years – after it folded last year.
A new sleigh was built and Benfied Kia loaned a vehicle to the scouts to tow it.
As part of the proceeds have always been donated to a charity, the scouts decided that they should continue to do this and the maternity unit at Wansbeck was recognised as a worthy cause for local residents.
Representatives of the scouts presented the cheque to midwife Aimee Straughan and Lynn Tilley, clinical lead midwife/modern matron. The money will be used to improve the unit’s environment and women’s experiences of being in labour.
The consultant-led unit at Wansbeck General Hospital is managed by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The Trust’s Bright charity provides the little extras which make a difference to patients.
