Rugby match to raise funds for patients at Wansbeck hospital.

A charity rugby match is taking place in Morpeth next week to raise funds to improve the experiences of patients undergoing treatments for cancer at Wansbeck General Hospital.

The match – Morpeff Stags v Jeffington – is on Saturday 23 April at Morpeth Rugby Club, kick off 2pm.

It has been organised by Andrew Norris in memory of his dad, Jeff Norris, to raise funds for the oncology day unit.

Jeff was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2013 and spent two years undergoing treatment before losing his battle, aged 60, last summer.

Andrew, captain of Morpeth’s fourth rugby team, said: “My dad was a big rugby fan and used to play for Ashington along with his two brothers.

“The oncology staff were absolutely brilliant throughout dad’s treatment and I’ve organised the match to thank them, help raise awareness of men’s health and give something back”

The match is part of the Morpeth Beer Festival which takes place Friday 22 and Saturday 23 April at Morpeth Rugby Club, Mitford Road, NE61 1RJ. Tickets are £10, for further information visit www.morpethrfc.co.uk

The event is supported by Bright Northumbria, the registered charity of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust which runs Wansbeck General Hospital aims to provide the extras that make a difference to patients.
