Paula, one of our Northumbria midwives lets us know more about her role as part of International Day of the Midwife
I’m Paula Thomas, I’ve been a Midwife for 30 years, 20 of those working at Berwick Maternity Unit.
I’m an enthusiastic Midwife who puts pregnant people at the centre of their care, encouraging all people to have confidence in themselves by ensuring that they are well informed throughout their pregnancies, during birth and as parents. I have specialist interests in public health issues, particularly in advising on the hazards of smoking in pregnancy and helping those that smoke to quit.
I’m qualified in Hypnobirthing and recommend all women investigate the advantages that the principals of Hypnobirthing can offer. I’ve been leading Aqua-natal classes at the local sports centre for the last 16 years. Helping women stay fit and healthy throughout their pregnancy reduces stress and the classes help to create friendships which last throughout pregnancy and often blossom into longer term friendships, as new families grow.
On a personal note, I’m married with two grown up children. I love coastal and hill walking; I run regularly, enjoy cooking and watching all sports -particularly rugby and cricket, with an occasional glass wine of course!
