Patient experience projects shortlisted for national awards

Initiatives which have improved patients’ experiences of healthcare in Northumberland and North Tyneside are in the running for three national awards.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has been shortlisted in three categories in the Patient Experience Network (PEN) awards – the only dedicated awards of its kind.

This year’s nominations bring the Trust’s total to 10 in the awards’ three-year history which is more than any other organisation.

A project to help people in Northumberland who care for family and friends to access health and social care support has been shortlisted in the ‘support for caregivers, staff and families’ category.

A ground-breaking initiative to deliver a dedicated dental service for looked after children and young people in North Tyneside is in the running for the ‘continuity of care’ award.

The Trust’s extensive patient experience programme which involves acting on the feedback of thousands of patients has been shortlisted in the ‘setting the stage/strengthening the foundations’ category.

Annie Laverty, the Trust’s director of patient experience, said: “It is excellent news that we have again been shortlisted in these national awards which recognise the hard work and enthusiasm of our frontline teams who are passionate about providing top quality care for our patients.

“As an organisation we are committed to listening to our patients’ experiences of our services in order to further improve our care and always welcome feedback from patients, relatives and carers.

“These nominations further endorse our continued focus on patient experience which has seen our performances grow year on year.

“It is particularly pleasing that two of our projects which have been shortlisted are for initiatives based outside of the main hospital setting – this demonstrates our commitment to improve patients’ experiences of all our services whether that be in hospital, in the community or at home.”

Northumbria Healthcare is continually rated as amongst the best performing trusts in England for patient experience and listening to people about their care. Overall patient experience results for 2012 show that the Trust is in the top 20% of trusts in England for inpatients and outpatients.

The national award winners will be announced by the Patient Experience Network in Birmingham on 6 February 2013.
