Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre, Tanzania
Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has worked in partnership with Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) for over fifteen years, training over 3,000 Tanzanians in a variety of healthcare professions. Our Link has undertaken a number of projects to improve a range of healthcare services in the hospital and at wider country level.
This has included the updating of clinical coding to ICD10 so that Tanzania can now report health statistics to WHO, development of Tanzania’s first BSc Physiotherapy degree course, introduction of laparoscopic surgery as a new service to Tanzania and the development of an ultrasound outreach service to serve remote rural areas. We have sent many containers of donations of medical equipment to the hospital to improve healthcare services. Our current projects focus on improving care for burns injuries. We also have research links with the hospital and Professor Richard Walker has led a number of teams to undertake research relating to Parkinson’s disease, stroke and epilepsy.
