Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals and Children with Cancer in Malawi

The paediatric oncology unit at the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne has a longstanding twinning programme with the paediatric oncology team in Malawi.  A charity has been established, Children with Cancer in Malawi, to support project work.

Through the charity, funds have been raised to buy essential chemotherapy and supportive care drugs as well as pay the salaries of a number of nurses. The Link has also provided essential equipment and support for remote pathological diagnosis and clinical advice.  Through the partnership, a number of treatment protocols have been developed which has resulted in improved survival for children in Malawi. The Link also provides some on the ground training for medical staff, especially nurses.
