New cancer service launched

We have become the  first NHS trust in the region to offer a one stop digital mammography service for patients across North Tyneside and Northumberland. The new equipment costing over £516,000 can detect breast cancer quickly and efficiently.

BBC Look North presenter Carol Malia opened the new digital imaging suite at Hexham General Hospital and met staff and patients before unveiling a plaque to mark the occasion.

North Tyneside and Wansbeck general hospitals already have the new digital imaging equipment and the Hexham suite can now offer Tynedale patients a one stop service for breast imaging, allowing prompt and efficient diagnosis of breast cancer.

The state-of-the-art equipment means that patients are seen within two weeks and have their examination, mammogram, ultrasound and diagnosis on the same day, resulting in early treatment that can save lives.

This means they do not have to return for results and diagnosis lessening the anxiety and worry for patients and their families at what will be for some a difficult time.
