Mr Liam Horgan, Consultant Laparoscopic Surgeon
“For the past 12 years one of my key achievements as a surgeon has been to reach out to colleagues in Tanzania and help train them to deliver laparoscopic surgery. This has not been an easy task but it has been immensely rewarding and along the way I have learnt a great deal about distance learning and even more about what motivates me as a surgeon. Volunteering in Tanzania has has unlocked the entrepreneur in me, promoted innovation and forced me to think outside the box. I became more versatile as a leader, developed new skills in service development and strategic planning, and cultivated strong cross-cultural relationships which, even today, help me in my daily role within the NHS.
International work is an important part of my life; it features right up there in terms of my important life goals and accomplishments”
