IT healthcare project in line for national award

An innovative IT project which is helping to streamline patient care in Northumberland and North Tyneside is in the running for a top national IT award.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s Single View clinical portal has been shortlisted in the E Health Insider Awards which reward excellence in healthcare IT.

The portal draws key information about patients from many clinical systems and puts this into one place, thus creating a ‘single view’ of a patient’s medical history.

It gives clinicians instant access to information about patients no matter where they are in the Trust’s vast area of Northumberland and North Tyneside.

Dr Christopher Strey, consultant physician at the Trust, said: “Single View provides patients with a significant improvement in the quality and safety of care we deliver.

“Inevitably it can take a few hours for a patient’s notes to arrive, so having an up-to-date summary provides crucial clinical information and helps prevent needless duplicate activity and unnecessary admissions to hospital. This works wherever we see patients, in A&E, in a clinic or simply during a telephone contact. It is invaluable.”

Kevin Dickinson, head of IT at the Trust, said: “We are very pleased to be shortlisted for this award. Single View has truly enhanced clinical practice, with instant information leading to more informed patient care.

“It shows that we are leading the way in integrating healthcare and IT to the benefit of patients.”

The winners will be announced on October 4.
