Gillian thanks unit for expert care

A woman who has battled breast cancer has raised £3,500 to thank staff at North Tyneside General hospital who have supported her over the last decade.

Gillian Keddy, 47, from Killingworth, held an auction to raise funds for the oncology day unit because she is so grateful for the ongoing care she has received.

Gillian said: “The unit is very close to my heart and the staff have become my comfort blanket over the years, providing fantastic support during a difficult time.

“The auction night was a great success and I would like to thank everyone who took part. We’re already planning next year’s party.”

A cheque was presented by Gillian alongside her cousin Deborah Prior to Allison Nielsen who works as a manager on the unit.

Allison said: “Staff who attended the auction were touched by the reception they received on the night. I am delighted to receive this cheque on behalf of the staff on the unit.

“The generous donation will go towards a new garden where patients can enjoy a calm and peaceful environment whilst they are with us for treatment.”

Lots in the auction, which were given by staff on the ward and friends of Gillian, included tickets for a Newcastle United match, a Barcelona football club signed photograph and shirt and mobile phones donated by Orange.
