Friends run to raise funds for breast cancer patients at Wansbeck hospital
A group of friends have raised nearly £2,000 by running this year’s Great North Run.
Led by Gail Ballance, friends Julie Phillips and Michelle Brannigan decided to set themselves a challenge by taking part in the run to raise funds for the breast clinic at Wansbeck General Hospital where Gail had been receiving treatment.
They were also supported by Gail’s 10-year-old godson Daniel who took part in the junior run and raised over £500.
Gail said: “In January when I found out my cancer hadn’t spread I decided to set myself a challenge to help focus my recovery and also as a way of saying thank you to the breast unit for the fantastic treatment I have received.
“I hope the funds we have raised can help support others diagnosed with breast cancer.’
Consultant Michael Carr said: “We are incredibly grateful to Gail, Daniel, Julie and Michelle for choosing to support the breast clinic. We appreciate the tremendous amount of effort that goes into the training for a challenge of this sort. It’s a fantastic achievement.
“The funds raised are very much appreciated and will help to fund a range of things to improve our patients’ experience.”
The donation to the breast clinic was made via Bright Northumbria which is the registered charity of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The charity aims to provide the extras to care that aren’t provided through regular NHS funding. For further information contact Bright Northumbria 0191 203 1354 email@example.com
