Dr Zafar Abbas, Hexham General Hospital and Friends of Muhammad Foundation Trust, Pakistan
Dr Abbas is a Consultant Physician based at Hexham General Hospital. He also works in an individual capacity and as a Trustee to help the charitable organisation, Friends for Muhammad Foundation Trust (FMFT). FMFT runs a number of projects in a remote and deprived area of Mirpurkhas, Pakistan, including a Medical College and charity hospital, Muhammad Medical College Hospital.
It aims to provide medical education to medical students and deliver healthcare to people who cannot afford medical treatments. Since 2003, FMFT have been providing support by arranging some funding for the hospital and organising visits from healthcare professionals in the UK to help increase student and doctor’s medical knowledge and expertise. Visitors, like Dr Abbas, deliver courses, workshops and lectures as well as offer clinical activities, such as hosting medical camps and training sessions. Individuals, including Dr Abbas, and other organisations, such as BETA Charitable Trust, provide a great deal of support to make this work possible.
