Day 9 – Lights, camera, operate

Having spent Monday evening reviewing 47 potential patients, Mr Horgan and Dr Kondo were able to determine 12 who were most suited for surgery. Over the next 3 days under the guidance of Mr Horgan, KCMC’s resident surgeons would be completing Hernia repairs, Lap Chole’s and appendectomies.

Following Mr Horgan’s instruction surgical resident Dr Theresia Edwards completed her first Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in a packed theatre. At a count, Dr Edwards had 50 pairs of eyes observing her as well as a television crew recording the procedure for broadcast on Tanzanian television.

The level of resilience/ preparedness was evident as three power outs plunged the operating theatre into total darkness, showing no sign of concern Mr Horgan, Dr Kondo and Dr Edwards patiently waited for the power to return before resuming their work.
