Day 3 – Problem solving

The team awoke to the news consultant surgeon Liam Horgan had unfortunately missed his connecting flight in Dubai, as the Beast from the East, the polar vortex battering the country had delayed his departure from Newcastle.

Not allowing the bad news to discourage us, everyone resumed work as normal and eagerly awaited his arrival.

The sheer volume of patients occupying both bed and floor space in surgical 1 became a major challenge for Julie to undertake her audit survey, while Sam was having similar issues in medical records with the available technology being uncooperative.

Only two days into our trip and our leadership fellows were receiving real world resilience training.

A visit to our former Commonwealth Scholars Simon Malaya and Matthew Shayo brought good news as both the occupational therapy and physiotherapy services have developed significantly since their return to Tanzania, especially in support of burns patients.
