Artist Jonathan’s welcome return to hospital

A modern look at the North East’s landmarks and landscapes feature in a new art exhibition at North Tyneside General Hospital in a welcome return for the artist.

Artist and illustrator Jonathan Chapman first exhibited at the hospital eight years ago while a student at University of Newcastle.

Since then Jonathan, who combines a hand-drawn style with an eye for colour, has spent time in the USA and Hampshire and this new exhibition, along the main corridor next to the x-ray department, is a fresh look at Newcastle and Northumberland.

It is part of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s long-standing healing arts programme which uses art as a therapeutic medium to improve the hospital environment for patients – particularly the elderly – visitors and staff.

Jonathan said: “It was in Newcastle that I began my creative career and the city, along with its surrounding countryside and coast, provided a great deal of visual inspiration that helped to shape the creative style I use today.

“Each illustration is a modern study of a city or a landscape, soaked in colour and framed by dark inks. Each canvas is a postcard of unchartered territory, mixing together natural elements with manmade structures.

“It’s been eight years since I first displayed artwork at North Tyneside hospital, so these paintings are a fresh look at Newcastle and Northumberland after some time away.

“It’s been a wonderful return, with plenty of new discoveries and lots of happy memories. I hope people at the hospital will enjoy viewing these colourful local scenes as much as I have enjoyed creating them.”

Brenda Longstaff, head of charity development and volunteering at Northumbria Healthcare, said: “It is a coup for the trust to have an exhibition of this calibre and we are delighted to welcome back Jonathan to North Tyneside hospital.

“We have kept in touch with Jonathan over the years and it has been excellent to watch his creative career progress, both here and abroad.

“We are passionate about improving the quality of our hospital environments through art to support the healing process for our patients and we hope that the illustrations will be enjoyed by all.”

The exhibition is on display until the summer.
