North East Whisky Appreciation Society supports oncology unit

Almost £400 has been raised to support patients at the oncology unit at Wansbeck General Hospital.

The funds were raised by the North East Whisky Appreciation Society from a whisky tasting and fundraising evening.

The society fundraises for different charities each year and chose to support the oncology day unit on the recommendation of one of their members, Denis Burn.

Denis received treatment on the unit in 2015 and later completed a 60-mile bike ride to raise funds for the unit. He
and Karl Glenn came along to present a cheque for £386 to the nursing staff.

Denis said: “The staff were all wonderful when I received treatment back in 2015. They do a fantastic job and we wanted to give something back.”

Ward manager Gillian Thorne said: “We are really grateful to the society for choosing to support us – the money raised will help to fund a range of things to improve our patients’ experiences including our ‘top to toe’ service which offers complementary therapies to patients undergoing treatment.

“Our warm thanks go to the North East Whisky Appreciation Society and everyone who kindly donated.”

The unit is one of a number of specialist cancer services run by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust across Northumberland and North Tyneside.
