Berwick’s photographers in the frame for town’s new hospital

Photographers from Berwick and the surrounding area are being given the opportunity to have their work displayed while the town’s new hospital is being built on the site of the existing infirmary.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has launched a photography competition to find images to be showcased during construction on the contractors’ display boards.

It is part of the trust’s long-standing healing arts programme which uses art as a therapeutic medium to improve the hospital environment for patients, visitors and staff.

The photography competition has two categories – iconic images of Berwick and local landscapes and coastline – and the closing date is midnight on Saturday 30 November 2019.

As the winning images will be enlarged, photographs will need a large file size, however, for the purpose of entry, images need to be resized to around 500kb and sent to brightcharity@northumbria.nhs.uk

The new hospital will embrace the latest technology and will provide all the current services, with a view to incorporating more when safe to do so. The trust hopes to be able to share the plans for the development with residents in the New Year

Brenda Longstaff, head of arts for the patient environment at Northumbria Healthcare, said: “We know local people are extremely keen to see building work start on the new hospital and we really want to involve them in this process.

“Stunning images, such as photographs of the town and the surrounding landscapes, will not only look fantastic but also brighten up the site during the construction phase.

“We know there are many talented photographers out there and we’d urge people to get out and about with their camera and send us their images to be in with a chance of having their work displayed.

“While we’ve run photography competitions for our hospitals in the past, this is the first time we’ve done one for the build and hope that people will take up this exciting opportunity.”

Selected photographs may also be exhibited in areas of the new hospital when completed.

Entrants should note that it is a condition of entry that all images submitted to the competition may be held on the trust’s database and reproduced for display within any of its hospitals or premises.
