Berwick hospital proposed timeline revealed

Plans for the new Berwick hospital are set to be shared with the public in March, as detailed in a proposed timeline to be presented today.

A report to Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s board states that a ‘substantial amount of activity’ has been underway to progress the design of the new hospital. This will be on show as part of engagement with the public with more details to follow.

Hoardings are also set to be erected around the building site in March, the report states, with demolition starting and a construction partner appointed in April, before a planning application is expected to be submitted in May.

If planning approval is granted in September, construction will then start on site with an expected completion date of spring 2022 for the new hospital.

As previously revealed by the trust, departments have been moved to make way for the new build on the northern end of the existing Berwick Infirmary site.

The report states that the build will be ‘modular’ which is a form of off-site construction with components built in a factory and transported to the site for assembly. This approach will deliver the new hospital in a shorter time frame.

The new hospital will re-provide all the existing services and embrace the latest technology. It is planned that Well Close GP surgery will be part of the new hospital.

Marion Dickson, executive director for nursing, midwifery, allied health professionals, surgery and community services at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, is leading the Berwick redevelopment project.

She said: “This update to the board is an important part in the process of building a new hospital for Berwick and sets out our proposed timeline of activity over the next few months.

“Decanting the hospital to the southern end of the infirmary site marks the completion of phase one of the development and means the part of the site to be developed is now vacant.

“As a trust we have positive experience of ‘modular’ build with our ambulatory care unit at our Northumbria hospital which was completed up to a year earlier than a ‘traditional’ build and feel it’s the best way forward for the new Berwick hospital.

“We know the community is keen to see the plans for the new hospital and we will be in touch when we have a date to share these with the public in March.”

Trust board members are asked to note the report and progress made.
