Award-winning stroke team visit Alnwick Garden

The award-winning Stroke team from Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust will be heading to Alnwick Garden on Tuesday 17th September at 2.30 pm to talk to the Elderberries Group about the care they give their patients.

Dr Stuart Huntley is the clinical lead at Wansbeck General Hospital where the dedicated stroke unit provides emergency care and rehabilitation for 350 patients each year.

The clinical lead for the North East Stroke Research Network, Dr Chris Price, will tell the group about his team’s work in the prevention and treatment of stroke.

The team includes specialist nurses and physiotherapists and in a national audit they were placed among the top in the country for the treatment they provide in emergency care and rehabilitation for stroke patients at Northumbria Healthcare.

More than two thousand NHS staff have attended their national training programme about emergency treatment of stroke In the last five years and the team has won many awards for their work in leadership, service redesign, quality improvement and for involving service users and carers in the development of their service.

Dr Huntley said:”Having a stroke can have an impact not only on the patient but on the family. We hope we will be able to give them reassurance that there is life after stroke.

“We will be telling them about our great team who care for patients who have had a stroke and the rehabilitation that goes on in our general and community hospital such as Alnwick Infirmary.”
