With thousands of courses, professional qualifications, apprenticeships and specialist training delivered every year, we make sure you have the opportunity to develop.

From your first day with us we work hard to make sure you and the trust get the very best out of your employment with us.

It doesn’t matter what job you do, what level you’re at or what age you are, it’s never too late to develop your skills or learn something new. Everyone who works for the trust has access to lots of opportunities for career progression. We offer a huge variety of training - over the coming year we will be delivering 2,000 courses.

If you’re still at school we can offer you work experience in a variety of settings to give you a taste of what it is like working in a busy trust. We often talk to pupils from local schools about the huge variety of careers open to them within a large NHS organisation like ours, with an opportunity to hear first hand from our staff doing the job every day.     

You can gain academic and vocational qualifications while you’re working for us, at lots of different levels. We can put you on the path towards gaining a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), with 26 different courses available at varying levels. Over the past year over 300 members of staff have achieved NVQs.

We participate in the national NHS graduate management trainee scheme which leads to an MSc in Healthcare Management. The course is run in conjunction with Newcastle University Business School. In addition we offer an in-house graduate management scheme which allows staff to study for the qualification alongside their current role.

An apprenticeship is a great way of learning new skills and we run them in business administration or health over a period of 1-2 years. We recruit apprentices to work for the trust and many go on to secure employment, some within the trust. There are also apprenticeship opportunities for staff already working for us.

We also offer specialist training throughout your career. For example we have a specialist training centre at Hexham General Hospital which runs training courses in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery to surgeons across the UK and Europe.

All our staff have to complete certain training as NHS employees to make sure patients, service users, visitors and our staff are as safe as possible.

Specialty training for doctors

Junior doctors are recruited to come and work in our trust through the Northern Deanery. We have a robust tutoring system in place for junior doctors to ensure that both you and the organisation benefit greatly from your time with us.

We have a faculty of appointed specialist tutors who ensure that all our trainees are well looked after, supervised and offered regular feedback. As a trainee you will work through a network of appointed educational supervisors who have a responsibility to train and support you to drive educational standards up. We deliver the highest quality education in each of the specialties and are constantly driving standards higher through a quality management programme.

Our trainers are themselves continuously trained and assessed so you can expect the highest standards of development. In addition we will ensure that any doctor with additional training needs or difficulties will be very well supported throughout their stay in Northumbria.

Nurse training

To equip our nurses and midwives to meet the ever changing demands and pressures of modern clinical practice, a wide variety of education, training and practice development is available. In addition there are also opportunities to undertake various degree and post graduate qualifications.
