Foundation and specialty training
Every year we welcome hundreds of junior doctors to work with us as part of their two year foundation training with Health Education North East (HENE).
As a junior doctor at Northumbria, you’ll spend the first four months of the year working in emergency care with our busy ‘front of house’ hospital teams. This will allow you to fulfil your annual on call commitments and gain valuable experience working full shifts with support from our senior clinicians. You will then spend four months working ‘back of house’ in theatres, wards and clinic environments, followed by the final four months of your year doing ‘elective’ work.
We are passionate about providing you with a first class education and training experience as you begin your career in the NHS and have a robust tutoring system in place so that you and the organisation will both benefit greatly.
Our Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington will enhance your training experience with us even further with emergency care consultants working 24/7 to provide supervision and support round the clock. We have brand new facilities for medical students and doctors in training including a medical training hub providing a rest space and kitchen area, a library with hot desks and meeting areas, and a dedicated seminar room for teaching.
Other specialties such as obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, anaesthetics, and surgical and medical trainees will also spend part of their rotation at the Northumbria hospital, offering unparalleled training opportunities in terms of direct clinical supervision.
We offer a range of specialties with some of the largest specialist departments in the region, including the largest trauma and orthopaedics service. North Tyneside General Hospital also has one of the largest cardiology departments and colorectal surgery services.
Supervision and support
We have a faculty of appointed specialist tutors who will ensure you are well looked after, supervised and offered regular feedback. As a trainee you will work through a network of appointed educational supervisors who have a responsibility to train and support you and we are constantly driving standards higher through a quality management programme.
Our trainers themselves are continuously trained and assessed so you can expect the highest standards of development. In addition we will ensure that any junior doctor with additional training needs or difficulties will be very well supported throughout their stay in Northumbria.
We strongly encourage the participation of our junior doctors in the management and oversight of training within the trust and a small number of foundation and specialty trainees are appointed each year to membership of the trust’s Medical Education Board. We also run an annual five day leadership programme which is free and open to all training grade doctors working in the trust. Feedback over the four years in which it has been running has been very positive.
As a foundation trainee will we also encourage you to participate in undergraduate teaching with regular ‘teaching the teacher’ courses.
