2018 – Orthopaedics

Our work in orthopaedics initiated in 2017 but was elevated in 2018 through a donation of key medical equipment and resources to support our partnership work with the department.

Led by consultant surgeons, Mr Ajay Malviya at Northumbria and Dr Faiton Mandari at KCMC, the orthopaedics project seeks to achieve a number of ambitious aims to strengthen capacity, reduce congestion on the ward and improve care.

The orthopaedics department at KCMC serves as the only referral specialised centre for management of Orthopaedic and Trauma in Northern Tanzania, providing care for over 15 million people. The department carries our all specialised surgeries including fractures and paediatrics, except for total hip and knee replacements and spinal fusion.

By the end of 2018 Northumbria had visited the department twice, delivering training sessions to a number of medical students and undertaking valuable reviews of services and facilities, working side by side with senior clinicians at KCMC and donated equipment to the hospital.
