£10,000 raised to support patients at Wansbeck General Hospital

More than £10,000 has been raised to improve the experiences of patients undergoing treatment for breast cancer at Wansbeck General Hospital.

Claire and Mark Baxter raised the funds together with friends and supporters from a range of fundraising activities held throughout the year, including a charity ball at the Grand Hotel Gosforth Park in November.

Claire said: “This is the fifth year that we have raised money for cancer charities and in 2019 we chose to support the breast cancer fund. I was treated for breast cancer back in 2006 and another close family member was treated in 2005.

“I received excellent care and wanted to give something back which will make a difference and help others in similar circumstances.

“My local gym in Blyth, Project U Fitness helped with fundraising activities throughout the year, Andrew Sims and his team are huge supporters and Mark’s badminton club, Morpeth Riverside with Karen Davison held a 24-hour badminton marathon. Friends have also taken part in challenging events, marathon’s, obstacle courses etc.

“We are delighted with the amount raised and would like to thank everyone who supported us. We are carrying on with the fundraising this year – a close friend of ours was recently diagnosed with follicular lymphoma, so we’ll be concentrating our efforts on supporting that area.”

Mark said: “Cancer affects almost everyone at some point in their lives. Since we started fundraising back in 2015 and set up ‘4Q cancer’ we have hit our target of £10,000 each year raising £50,000 to date. All of the money has gone towards helping people who have been diagnosed with cancer.”

Kath Atkinson, Macmillan breast care nurse at Wansbeck hospital, said: “On behalf of all the breast care team I’d like to say a big thank you to Claire, her family and all her friends for all their hard work fundraising – it’s an amazing achievement.

“The money will be used to benefit breast cancer patients using our service in our local area and improve their experiences of receiving care.”

The donation to the breast cancer fund was made via Bright Northumbria which is the registered charity of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The charity aims to provide the extras to care that aren’t provided through regular NHS funding. For further information contact Bright Northumbria 0191 203 1354 brightcharity@northumbria.nhs.uk
