Stoma care

    • Listening to patients
    • Listening to patients

The stoma care service will care for you if you are going to have, or have had, an operation resulting in a stoma.

A stoma is a section of bowel brought through an artificial opening that is made through the right or left side of a person’s abdomen. A pouch (bag) is worn over the ‘stoma’ to collect waste from the body.

Clinics

You will need an appointment to attend a nurse-led stoma clinic which can be made by telephoning 0191 220 5918. They are held on:

  • The second Monday afternoon of the month at Albion Road Clinic, Albion Road, North Shields
  • Last Monday afternoon of the month at Wallsend Health Centre, The Green, Wallsend

Your care

The service provides ‘packages of care’ delivered as follows:

Planned pre-operation package: if you are having planned surgery in North Tyneside General Hospital and may require a stoma.

This involves one of our stoma nurses providing pre-operation counselling and talking through with you the best place for the stoma to go.  This is usually carried out in your home, although on occasions it could be a hospital ward or outpatient clinic.

After the operation in hospital: after you have had surgery resulting in the formation of a stoma.

The stoma care nurses along with ward nursing staff will teach you how to change your pouch (bag) as well as how to look after your stoma before you go home from hospital.  Once you are able to care for your stoma and the consultant surgeon assesses you are medically fit, you will be discharged home where your package of stoma care is continued. The frequency of visits will reduce following assessment at each visit.

Following discharge from hospital: if you live in North Tyneside and have had an operation in one of our hospitals which has resulted in the formation of a stoma, you will receive visits from the stoma care nurse during a three month period after surgery.

You are encouraged to contact the service if you have any problems with your stoma in the future.
