If you have an illness or injury and need medical help outside of normal working hours there are lots of services available to you. The service you need will depend on the severity of your illness or injury.

NHS Direct

Gives you expert health advice, information and support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The telephone service can be reached by calling 0845 4647 and the website at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk

Out-of-hours GP and district nurse services

If your GP surgery is closed and you need to see a doctor or nurse urgently, call the out-of-hours GP service on 0300 123 4343. This service is provided by Northern Doctors Urgent Care.

If you need the services of a district nurse outside of normal working hours please call the out of hours district nurse service (provided through Northern Doctors Urgent Care) on 0300 123 1931.

Out-of-hours dentistry

If you are experiencing severe dental pain outside of normal working hours please call 0845 608 0324. This service is available Monday to Friday 7pm to 11pm and Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays from 9am to 10pm.  

Outside of these times you should go to accident and emergency if it is a dental emergency.

NHS walk-in centres

If you have a minor injury or illness such as a cut, sprain, minor burn or broken bone you can be seen in a walk-in centre. You do not need to make an appointment but it is worth telephoning in advance to check that you can be treated, especially if you are taking a young child.  Local walk-in centres are: 

• Wansbeck Primary Care Access Centre Next to accident and emergency at Wansbeck General Hospital. Open Monday to Friday 8.30am to 6.30pm except bank holidays when the centre is closed. Please call ahead to make an appointment on 01670 529 205. 

• Battle Hill Walk-in Centre, Battle Hill Health Centre, Belmont Close, Wallsend, NE28 9DX. Open 8am to 8pm seven days a week. Tel: 0191 295 8520 or visit: www.battlehillhc.co.uk. 

• Shiremoor Health Resource Centre, Earsdon Road, Shiremoor. Open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5.45pm except bank holidays when the centre is closed. No appointment is needed but you may want to call in advance on 0191 297 9000. 

Minor injuries units

There are minor injuries units at some of our community hospitals:

Rothbury Community Hospital

Haltwhistle War Memorial Hospital

Accident and emergency

You should call 999 or go to accident and emergency only if your injury or illness is life threatening or cannot wait. You should dial 999 immediately if you or someone else is seriously ill.
