Emergency care practitioners (ECPs) are highly skilled practitioners who provide a range of services both in the community and at the Shiremoor Resource Centre where the team is based.

The team was established to prevent unnecessary admissions to hospital and to provide an alternative to attending accident and emergency. The specialised training ECPs undertake, allows them to see and treat a range of minor injuries and prescribe medications to treat a variety of conditions.

Clinics  

ECPs provide their services at Shiremoor minor injuries clinic at Shiremoor Resource Centre. This is a walk-in service operating between 10am - 6pm, Monday to Friday (not including bank holidays). No appointment is necessary but you can contact the minor injuries clinic on 0191 2536966.

You can often be treated much quicker at a minor injuries clinic than at the accident and emergency department of a hospital if your injury is minor.  The types of minor injuries we can treat at the clinic include: 

• Skin infections 
• Allergic reactions 
• Falls - minor injuries, lacerations 
• Back pain - acute, musculoskeletal 
• Minor injuries 
• Wounds 
• Bruising 
• Swelling 
• Cuts 
• Sprains 
• Minor eye conditions 
• Stings/insect bites 
• Ring removal 
• Foreign bodies in noses or ears

Home visits

ECPs also visit patients in their own homes who have been referred to them. Referrals for home visits will be made through your GP practice or the ambulance service.

Nursing homes

Nursing homes in North Tyneside are able to contact the service directly and request visits for their clients. This service helps to prevent frail and vulnerable people having to attend the accident and emergency department.

Home visits and nursing home visits take place 7 days a week, 7am to 7pm. If you need help outside of these times please look at our out-of-hours section.
